This past weekend, I went to Venice! It was so much fun. If I talked to you before leaving, I'm sure I told you how excited I was to go for a ride in a gondola. That was really the only thing I told people I wanted to do this entire semester. Wish granted! I rode in a gondola this weekend, and it was everything I hoped it would be. We rode around for about 45 minutes taking in the sights and loving the smell of "the beach."
This weekend also happened to be the first weekend of Carnivale in Venice. Carnivale is kind of the US equivalent of Mardi Gras, except it's way classier. I bought a Venetian mask and watched a boat parade on the canal on Saturday night, while everyone else I know was shoveling snow.
I ate lots of great food this weekend. I had a real Italian cannoli, and it was delicious. We had pizza, pasta and pastries daily. No complaints here.
We also had the opportunity to tour the Doge, St. Mark's Basilica, the Scuola Grande San Rocco, the Chiesa (church) di San Rocco (where his body is apparently buried behind the altar), and got lost in the alleys a couple times. I only cried about that twice. I will never leave home or the train station without a map ever again.
Overall, it was a wonderful weekend. I would love to write more and tell more stories but this week we have two papers and two quizzes, we still have to plan activities for this weekend's trip and plan our two week break to the UK next week. I know you don't feel bad for me. I wouldn't either. Hope everyone is doing well wherever this finds you, hopefully not buried in piles of snow.
I'll write again soon!
Love,
Swiss Miss
